Bobbie Fisher Recovery 2

Dear Munho,

I am sorry to let you know that my father and mother (Rev. and Mrs. Fisher) have both passed away. My father died January 24, 2003 from heart disease. My mom passed away on April 4, 2004 after a lenghty battle with pneumonia and other infections. My mom lived here with me from March 2003 until she died here at my home in April.

They were both incredible people and I miss them greatly. My mom's courage throughout her ordeal was incredible. A spinal cord injury is devastating. She wasn't as bad as Christopher Reeves since she could breathe on her own though her age became a factor. She just didn't have the respiratory strength that she needed.

Once again, I'm sorry to inform you of their loss. There is a math scholarship fund at Godwin named afer her - the Bobbie Fisher Math Scholarship Fund that is designated to assist students interested in either pursuing a degree in math or have shown great effort in math. Donations are most welcome. My brother and I hope to keep that scholarship going for quite some time as a way to honor her.

Sincerely,
AnnMarie Price

Bobbie Fisher Recovery

Mrs. Bobbie Fisher, a much beloved math teacher at Godwin High School, experienced a significant stroke which resulted in a single car rollover accident on December 25, 2000. Mrs. Fisher suffered a spinal cord injury, level c5, that left her a quadriplegic. In January she underwent surgery to fuse vertebrae c4, c5, and c6 to stabilize her neck. Mrs. Fisher was in the capable and caring hands of the doctors and nurses at the Medical College of Virginia from the date of the tragic accident to March 28, 2001.

Since that time, Mrs. Fisher has continued her occupational, physical, and speech therapy at Retreat Hospital on Grove Avenue. Don't be fooled by the "speech therapy"; Mrs. Fisher is still talking up a storm! The stroke primarily affected her ability to read (which is slowly coming back) and some short term memory loss. Mrs. Fisher is learning how to drive again but this time it's a power wheelchair!

Rev. and Mrs. Fisher will be living with their daughter, AnnMarie, and her family at 10401 Leander Drive, Glen Allen, VA 23060. (email: FISHERPRICE1989@aol.com) Mrs. Fisher was released from Retreat Hospital on April 19, 2001. HOORAY!

........At this time........

Mrs. Fisher is receiving outpatient rehabilitation therapy at the Health South Rehabilitation Hospital located at Fiyzhugh and Libbie Avenues.

........Recovery Fund........

The financial needs of the Fishers are overwhelming. The family will need to purchase a hospital bed ($1500), a manual wheelchair ($2500 ), a power wheelchair ($12,000), a van ($?), and numerous other items required for lifting and caring for a quadriplegic. Since the insurance company only provides $2500 for equipment, Mrs. Fisher's colleagues have established a fund to help with these expenses. If you would like to make a contribution , please write a check payable to the

Bobbie Fisher Recovery Fund. Send it to:

First Union Bank
9700 Gayton Road
Richmond, VA 23233

The Fishers will greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity.

........."Guys and Dolls" Benefit ?/FONT>

The Short Pump Players of Godwin High School presented a benefit performance of
"Guys and Dolls" on Saturday, May 5, 2001. About 200 people attended the play, and they
were enthusiastically greeted by Rev. and Mrs. Fisher, AnnMarie, Drew and their children.
Thanks so much to Mr. Damron and his assistants, the cast and crew of "Guys and Dolls",
the PTSA, the media, and everyone who helped make this event possible. Approximately
$5000 was contributed to the Bobbie Fisher Recovery Fund.

.........Ukrops Golden Gift Certificates...........

The Godwin PTSA collected the Ukrops Golden Gift Certificates to donate to the Bobbie Fisher Recovery Fund.

........About Mrs. Fisher........

As a graduate of Gettysburg College, Mrs. Fisher's first teaching assignment was in southwestern Virginia. She began her twenty-three year tenure in Henrico County at Varina High School in 1978. After also teaching at Byrd Middle School and Henrico High School, Mrs. Fisher became a Godwin Eagle in the fall of 1981. She has enjoyed teaching and working with students in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry. Mrs. Fisher is a very special and caring teacher with a generous spirit and heart of gold. She is well known to students and faculty alike for her sense of humor, sincerity, and sensitivity.

Mrs. Fisher has been a faculty advisor for many extracurricular activities. She sponsored the Math Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, for many years and coordinated such activities as the Virginia and National Math League contests. As a tribute to Mrs. Fisher, the Godwin chapter of Mu Alpha Theta will be renamed the Barbara Fisher Chapter. In addition, she served as a cosponsor of the CLASS of ?1 and the CLASS of ?3. As the chairman of the faculty hospitality committee, Mrs. Fisher organized many of the faculty social gatherings.

Professionally, Mrs. Fisher was a participant in local, regional and national math conferences. On several occasions she presented informative ideas and materials relating to the teaching of math. She was an active member of several textbook adoption and curriculum writing committees for Henrico County.

Mrs. Fisher has been married to Reverend Ronald I. Fisher for forty years. They began their life together in Roanoke and then moved frequently as Rev. Fisher was serving in several Lutheran churches in Virginia and West Virginia. The Fishers moved to Richmond in 1978 when Ron became the minister at Epiphany Lutheran Church. After suffering a second heart attack, Rev. Fisher retired from Epiphany in 1982. Since that time, the Fishers have joined Christ Lutheran Church and have been active members there.

Rev. and Mrs. Fisher have two children, AnnMarie and Drew. AnnMarie graduated from Douglas S. Freeman High School in 1982 and from Roanoke College and George Mason University. Drew is a graduate of Mills E. Godwin High School (CLASS of ?3) and Old Dominion University. Both AnnMarie and Drew live in the Richmond area with their families. The Fishers have four grandchildren to love and spoil!
